Dreams And Wishes

What would it be like to be a heroine in a novel, to live in a life made up with perfection, charm and
symmetry
To believe in a world where lights always turn green, the good guys win and love lasts? Wouldn't be
something?
Just imagine, it would be a perfect life, with no sorrow or pain, just everlasting love for everyone.
Her life was what everyone else thought to be perfect: she had a loving family, plenty of money, a roof
over her head, but there was that one thing missing, 'true love'.
She would gaze out of the windows of the house at all the couples so madly and deeply in love with each
other, kissing tenderly and caressing as they went about their daily business. She would spend hours
imagining what it would be like to be so in love with someone that you wanted to spend the rest of you life
with them.
All the cliches: Through sickness and in health, through richer, through poorer, till death do us part.
Oh so very romantic, and so out of reach
The light of the dawn streamed in through the curtains hanging at the bedroom window of the
traditional English cottage. Daniel Jones rolled over in bed, awakened by the vivacious colours now
dancing around the room. He sat up and looked at his wife, curled into a tight foetal position,
sleeping peacefully beside him. He leaned over and kissed her gently on the lips, waking her.
"Merry Christmas Addy."
She smiled. "Merry Christmas to you, too. What time is it?"
"Early, the sun's just rising, look". Dan got out of bed and drew the curtains back. The dawn
sunlight flooded the room with vibrant shades of pinks.
Adelaide rose to stand beside Daniel, and they stood at the bedroom window, watching the sunrise.
"Aww, it's so lovely," she sighed. "What a peaceful way to start whats going to be such a hectic
couple of days!"
"Remember last year?" Dan asked with a grin. "At least it won't be quite so chaotic. This year we
have Elspeth with us."
"Thank heaven for small, or in this case, major blessings." Adelaide wrapped her arms around
Daniel's waist, stood on tiptoes amd rested her head on his shoulder.
Motherly 50-year old widow Elspeth McThwaite was the Jones' housekeeper. But to Dan and Addy,
she was more than that. She was a nanny, cook, cleaner, and most importantly, a good friend. At
times like this, they wondered how they had ever managed without her. However, they both knew that
they shouldn't get too dependent on Elspeth, but at the same time were amazed at the affection and
warmth the lady projected, and the eagerness she approached life with
"I can't believe Elspeth insisted on working over the festive season." Addy shook her head in
disbelief
Adelaide couldn't believe that someone would rather work than celebrate Christmas with her family.
When Addy told the woman this, Elspeth just laughed and replied that the Jones' were the only family
she had, or wanted anymore.
"That woman has a heart that is pure 24 carat gold. At least she agreed to have lunch with us, rather
than at the kitchen table as she always does. I honestly wish I could be half the person she is, she's
just so, so, oh I don't know what it is, but there's something about Elspeth that..." Addy turned to
Dan, "Are you actually listening to me? Daniel?"
"Hmm... Waht?? Listen, we'd better get back into bed, because..." Dan didnt get time to finish his
sentence before Megan and Zachary, the couple's two young children busrt into the room, dragging
sacks filled with brightly-wrapped presents behind them
"Mommy, Daddy, it's Christmas, and Santa's been," cried 5-year old Megan ecstatically whilst 3-year
old Zachary contented himself jumping up and down on the bed.
"Okay everyone, into the bed," ordered Dan, laughing. "Then the unwrapping shall begin!" Megan,
Zachary and Addy all squealed with delight as they clambered into the bed.
Adelaide couldn't remember a time when she'd been happier
Of course, she knew that such a world could never be, or if it did, she could never be a part of it, but she
would always have dreams and wishes.
