Love Will Be The Death Of You

Signe quietly looked around the kitchen for the paring knife. She looked in the drawers and the cupboards, but she couldn't find it. Finally, she looked in the microwave, and there it lay, sitting there. "Sheesh" she muttered to herself angrily as she picked it up and started paring the apple peel off the apple. As she took a bite, she realized how lonely she was since her mother died and how forgetful she was becoming.
A small tear fell down her cheek, and fell onto the ground. "God," she muttered again, "I'm turning into such a softy." Walking across the kitchen floor, she grabbed a small plate she had put on the table earlier
(When did I put that there?)
and placed the apple on it. It rolled off onto the ground, and hit the floor with a thunk.
"Damn it," she cursed under her breath. But before she could go pick it up, the telephone rang loudly on the desk.
"Hello?" Signe quietly said as she answered the phone.
"Signe? Hey, how are ya?" a loud and high-pitched voice said to her.
"Oh, hi, Candra," she answered as she leaned against the wall and played with the telephone cord with her fingers. "What's up with you?"
"Well, I just wanted to know when you wanted to come pick us up tonight for the concert."
"Oh yeah, the concert. Um, how about 5?"
"Sure!" Candra said. Suddenly, she started laughing.
"Uh, what are you laughing about?" Signe asked curiously.
"Oh, it's just that Chris's over, and he won't stop tickling me..."
Candra suddenly let out a loud squeal as Chris tickled her again, and Signe had to pull the phone away from her ear because the laughter was so loud.
(Will those two ever stop?)
"I gotta go now," Signe said loudly. Those two always seemed to be doing something.
"What? What was that?"
"I said, I have to go now!" she yelled into the phone so that Candra could hear her.
"Oh, yeah, I guess so, we gotta get ready-" (followed by another round of giggles) "Chris, shut up, will ya?! Anyway, pick us up soon, okay Sig? Oh, and don't forget... introduce us to Daniel and Darren!"
"Yeah, that I'll do. Bye now," Signe sighed, but Candra didn't hear her over she giggles she was producing. Hanging up the phone slowly, she walked over to the apple that had fallen on the ground, picked it up, and threw it in the garbage.
Chapter 2
She had to smile to herself, because Candra was dying to see Darren and Daniel. Candra didn't believe that Signe knew Savage Garden at first, but after Signe proved that she did actually know them, because she had met them before they had hit it big in the music buisness, Candra was always asking Signe to introduce her to them. Signe and the guys occasionally exchanged letters and emails once and a while, and tonight at the concert they were performing they were allowing Signe to introduce her friends to them. Also, Candra had the biggest crush on Daz and would not stop talking about him.
Signe also had a crush on Darren, but it wasn't a giddy, little-kid crush like what Candra had. Signe truly loved him, and she never told anyone this. While Candra would rave on and on about how cute and wonderful he was, Signe would just sit there with a smile playing on her lips and think about how beautiful he was and picture him serenading a song to her. She was in true love.
She walked into the living room sadly, looking at the pictures on the wall of her and her mother. Her mother was smiling and cheerful, until she had become ill. Since her mother had died of a head injury, and was the only real friend that Signe ever had. She had no brother or sisters or cousins, and hell, she didn't even know where her father was. She did have a group of aunts, who were strange and always dressed in black and never smiled or visited. Now that her mother had passed on, Signe had inherited the house and everything her mother owned.
Looking deep into fire in the fire place, she thought of how much her mother liked to help people. She had worked as a doctor at the local hospital, and had helped many people who had come into the clinic that were sick and she had helped them regain their health.
As Signe looked deeper into the fire, she had a flash of her mother when she had been on her death bed at the hospital where she worked.
"Signe," she coughed out weakly, barely able to take a breath.
"Yes, Mom?"
"Don't worry, I'll always be with you. Wherever you are, I always will be there."
"I love you, Mum," Signe cried out softly, "Don't go, please don't go."
"Signe, you know I have to. I had to help that girl, and the only way I could was to give my life."
"Why, Mom, why?"
"That's what I do, Signe... I heal people. You have to, too, remember. It's in your past, and it's your future."
"I love you, Mum," Signe whispered as she held her mother's hand to her face, "Please let me help you."
"No Signe, no... I don't want you to get hurt," her mother protested weakly, "You can't help me, you have to build up you power before you can help people, and don't waste it on me."
Signe suddenly snapped out of her trance, aware that the fire was becoming increasingly hot and was burning her face slightly. She blinked a couple of times, to moisten her drying eyes, and also to keep back the tears. She had that flash of memory whenever she sat still long enough, and it always made her depressed. Why hadn't her mother let her help her? Maybe Signe wouldn't have been able to completely heal her, but maybe she would have done enough to at least make her survive for a few more days.
Signe's mother had dies after healing a young girl, who was probably around Signe's age, who had been hit by a car. She had suffered severe internal bleeding and a concussion, and would have died if Signe's mother hadn't put her hands on the young girl and healed her injuries. She had stayed up all might with the girl, and healed her until her wounds were better and she was for sure going to survive. But because she healed her, Signe's mother had to take part of the injury, so she had in return had gained the internal bleeding, and because she refused to let Signe help her, and because the injuries she had taken on, she had died a few days later.
Chapter 3
Signe sat cross-legged, rocking back and forth, back and forth, staring into the fire further and further until images began to flicker in front of her. The images at first were blurry as the flames leaped higher, but soon they cleared as she focused her mind on the images. She saw Candra in her kitchen, laughing happily as Chris made faces at her. Signe couldn't actually hear what they were saying to each other; she never could. She could only see the images in the fire. Sometimes she could see people all the way over on the other side of the world... she would concentrate on a spot, and then it would appear when she opened her eyes.
She remembered she had seen the rugged outbacks of Australia, and how beautiful the water had looked in the Caribbean. The jungles of Brazil and South America made amazed her, because there were such wonders there that she knew she would probably never see in person. It amazed her, the whole power that she had in her.
Sometimes, although not very often, she would see into the future, like when she saw she was going to get her first bicycle from her mother for her birthday when she had been a child. Or the time she saw Chris fall out of the tree and break his arm, and learned that he had done so a few days after her vision.
She calmly focused in on another scene... of Darren and Daniel at the sound check, which they would surely be doing right now, and when she opened her eyes, there they were: Daniel strumming chords and bars on his electric guitar, and Darren singing songs into the microphone as though the concert actually was taking place right then and there. Although she couldn't hear the music and Darren singing with Anna and Nicole, she knew it was beautiful. She smiled happily, knowing that Savage Garden were going to perform an excellent concert that night.
But suddenly, she imaged wavered a little bit. Signe looked again at it, and thought that maybe she had just lost concentration for a minute and that's why the visions had flickered. But then she looked closely, and saw that it was the concert that was going to be performed that night. The image seemed to pulse with the rhythm
(I must be seeing into the future!)
and the beat that was being played. She saw the crowds of people who were clapping and cheering as Darren and Daniel finished off a song. She vaguely saw herself and Candra
(I wonder where Chris is. Probably in the washroom)
in the front row, clapping their hands. The stage went black, and soon more lights were flashing as the beginning of a new song started. The lights went on, and it showed Darren on the stage, dancing around in a dark red tight shirt. She knew that he singing I Want You from the way his lips moved quickly.
Signe couldn't help but laugh, seeing the way Darren ran up and down the stage and grabbed his crotch playfully.
(Isn't he supposed to save that for All Around Me?)
Daniel stood beside, smirking like a little boy and laughing playfully. Signe giggled as she watched Darren's antics upon the stage. She knew that it was going to be a good concert tonight, because Daz and DJ looked so energetic and the crowd was going wild with delight at the music they were playing.
Suddenly, as Anna walked across the stage, Darren quickly grabbed his stomach without notice and doubled over. Signe looked closer at the image, and her heart beat sped up. Darren was clutching his stomach and was bent over, and you could clearly see a look of unimaginable pain on his face. Red ran over his hands onto the stage
(Oh my God! He's bleeding!)
and his legs shook uncontrollably. He fought to stand up, and jerkily rocked back and forth.
With a look of horror on her face, Signe watched the image closer and concentrated fully on it. She didn't even hear the telephone when it rang.
Daniel had stopped playing the guitar and literally dropped it onto the ground, and so had the rest of the band. People panicked and ran, their mouths wide open in silent screams. Darren brought his hands up to his face to look at them, and they were covered with blood, and his shirt was wet and sticky, with a small bullet hole in the front. He seemed to be trying to shout to someone in the front row,
(Oh my God! It's me!)
but soundless words came from his lips and he wasn't able to talk. Signe could see that he couldn't speak, even though she couldn't hear any of the sounds.
All of a sudden, Darren flew backwards, his legs and arms flying in the air and he landed on the stage 5 feet from where he was before. He lay there, still and silent, as a puddle of blood spread around his head and across the stage. His hair had taken on a dark crimson color, and the side of his head was bleeding profusely.
(OH MY GOD!)
Chapter 4
Signe could see Daniel running over to Darren on the stage, holding him up, trying to wake him up, but to no avail. She saw Daniel throw his head up into the air and screaming, with his long and slender neck twisting despairingly, all the while clutching Darren to his stomach. But Darren made no movement; he didn't say a word. He just lay there on the stage, silent and still, his arms and legs spread out like a broken doll. That's what he could have been, with his porcelain white skin, dark eyelashes, and full lips. A broken doll, waiting to be fixed.
People ran all over, waving their hands in the air and screaming soundlessly. Signe saw Anna and Nicole running backstage, most likely to phone the paramedics. Ben and Lee ran over to Daniel and Darren, and ripped off the sleeves of their shirts to bandage Darnel's head and stomach. They propped up Darren's head, while Daniel shakily got up. He held up his hands and stared at the blood on them, his eyes wide and glazed over.
"DARREN!!!!" Signe screamed with all her might, hoping that by doing so he would be revived, but as soon as the word left her mouth, the vision in the fire flickered warily, and then totally vanished before her eyes. She realized that she was shaking, hyperventilating, and that tears ran down her cheeks like a river.
She closed her eyes, trying to tune out all sounds such as the cackling of the fire and the telephone ringing, and tried to concentrate on nothingness. But she kept on seeing the image of Darren lying on the ground and Daniel holding him in his lap. She was horrified at what she had just seen. An unknown person had just shot Darren with a gun in the stomach and head.
Suddenly, the thought struck her that the horrid event would most likely take place that night.
"What am I going to do?" she sobbed as she rocked back and forth, just like Dan had done. "What am I going to do?"
She contemplated trying to stop the concert from happening, to convince Daniel and Darren to postpone it to another night. But then Signe realized that would be impossible. She would never be able to get anyone to listen to her. Besides, what would she say? "Oh, I had a vision that something terrible was going to happen at the concert tonight... can we have show some other time?" But she somehow had to prevent Daz from being shot.
Yeah, like that would work. They would all think she was a loony. Not even Daniel or Darren knew about her power. No one did, except for her mother, who also had it. But Signe's power to heal was still quite strong.
Signe's mother had explained to her that she came from a long line of witches... white witches that practiced the white magic, not black ones that practiced the dark arts. They were descendants in a long line of healers, where only the women had the power, and the men would not receive it. Usually, the witch would have one special power that was the strongest. Signe's mother's strongest power was the power of touch, which was why she was able to diagnose patients easily of their illness and also her power to heal was magnified. She explained that Signe's power most likely was the power of sight, because she was able to see images if she stared into a fire long enough. Her mother confessed that even she herself couldn't do that. That probably explained why Signe couldn't heal people as quickly... she had the power of sight.
But now that her mother passed on, and Signe wasn't able to learn any new information about her past.
Suddenly, she snapped out of the catatonic-like trance she had been in and heard that telephone ring again. Quickly running over to the desk, she picked it up and said a quiet hello.
"Sig!!!!" a loud voice shouted, "When are ya gonna pick us up, gal?!"
Signe glanced up at the clock, and saw it was 10 after 5. "Oh my God!" she gasped as she realized how late she was, "I'm so sorry! I guess I lost track of time when I, uh, fell asleep!"
"Well, I've been trying to phone you for the last 10 minutes!" Candra exclaimed, "It's been half an hour since I last spoke to ya! You were sleeping?! My God, why didn't you wake up?!"
"I'm sorry, Candra... I was just, um, having a real bad dream, and, uh, couldn't wake up. Anyway, I’m gonna be over there as soon as I can, okies?"
"Yeah, well move you ass outta there! The concert starts in half and hour, and I wanna get there and meet Daz and Dan!"
"Yeah, I'll be there in a few minutes. Bye."
Signe quickly hung up the phone and rushed upstairs. She put on a bit of lipstick and eyeshadow, and threw on a clean shirt with a black dragon on it's front. She would have worn the one she had on before, but it was drenched with sweat from when she saw the vision in the fire.
"There may be only one way I can change what might happen," she whispered as she went through a plastic bag that had been thrown onto her bed a few hours before. She fished around in it for a few seconds, then pulled out a few articles of clothing. The two shirts were for Darren and Daniel, and she had bought them for the guys at the mall because had been in a giving mood. She had a silver and black top for Dan with strange white symbols on it, and a small white one for Daz that had a red dragon on the front and two red stripes along the outside of either arm. She hoped that if she convinced Daz to wear the top while he sang I Want You, then he would not be shot and receive the gunshot wounds.
Maybe she could stop fate from taking its toll, and save Darren by trying to change the situation.
It was a long-shot, but it was her only hope.
Running down the stairs and flying out the door, she hopped into her dark blue car, threw the two shirts in the backseat, and sped off to Candra's house to pick her and Chris up for the concert.
But the whole time she was driving, feeling of anxiousness and doom were inside her and she couldn't shake them, no matter how hard she tried.
