Tappety tappety tap. Tappety tappety tap. Tappety tappety tap.
Darren brought his book a little closer to his face and tried to not let his eyes wander to Daniel’s laptop. The sight of the guitarist long, graceful fingers flying across the keys was much too distracting.
Tappety tappety tap. Tappety tap-
The sudden silence that filled the room was almost louder than Daniel’s typing had been. Darren looked at Daniel and noticed that his shoulders were shaking, like he was laughing at something. But then Darren got a look at the blond one’s face.
He’s not laughing. He looks like he just found out a scary surprise. Darren’s curiosity got the better of him and he craned his neck to try to look at the laptop’s screen.
“Hey Jonesy, is something the matter?” Darren asked. Daniel’s head jerked up and he looked at Darren with an odd panicky expression that disappeared so fast Darren wasn’t sure he had seen it in the first place.
“Ah, no, of course not. I just found a site that comes to some odd conclusions, startled me a little, that’s all.” Daniel replied in a light tone, wearing a grin that seemed a little forced. Darren raised an eyebrow at him.
“What sort of conclusions?” he wanted to know, getting an odd feeling in the pit of his stomach.
“Er, that we either are a couple or that we should be. Pretty funny isn’t it?” Daniel replied, laughing nervously. Darren joined in with him even though he felt a little confused and Daniel wouldn’t meet his eyes. Why was Daniel acting so high-strung?
“Where are you getting this info?” Darren asked quietly.
“At this site,” Daniel replied, indicating his laptop screen. “called The Real Deal. Here, take a look.” he got up and seemed to bolt out of the room, leaving a puzzled Darren to take his vacated seat.
The singer quickly read through all the pages at that site.
“My God, a lot of this is logical and precise reasoning and data. I wasn’t aware I had made myself so obvious.” Darren muttered to himself. He looked up and noticed that Daniel had wandered back to the doorway of the room.
“Makes a lot of sense, what they are saying. Too much sense.” Darren called to the guitarist, making it seem like he saw the whole thing as a joke.
“They do have a lot of ‘proof’ don’t they?” Daniel grinned “Too bad I don’t fancy you, eh Daz?” he joked back but Daniel’s face betrayed him as the grin faltered and Darren saw that same panicky expression flit across his face. The tension grew between them as they stood frozen, staring at each other, furtively looking for some sign. What kind of sign, neither was really sure. Abruptly, Daniel fled the room again.
Sighing, Darren turned his attention back to the laptop screen, trying to keep himself distracted.
“Hmmm...what are these pics at the bottom? Ohhh...they’re links!” Darren exclaimed.
The singer was muttering to himself as he scanned the screen.
“Dan and Daz Erotica Page?...no, that’s a bit much for now... hey what’s this site?....all it says is ‘Going Down?’...oh I get it, it’s that pic of us in front of an elevator...” Darren chuckled in spite of himself. It was clever wordplay, he had to admit, fighting to smother the mental pictures that it conjured.
What I wouldn’t give to be able to go down on... Darren purposely didn’t finish that thought, concentrating on following the link and not letting his thoughts wander again.
The singer clicked away and eventually landed at a site with the title ‘The Night Island.’
“Hey I like this site, Luna and Mandy sure know their Anne Rice!” Darren grinned, reading on about things like Children of the Millennia. Darren looked over his choice of options, then chose a link called ‘Yummy stories’ or something.
The dark-haired one felt like raising an eyebrow at some of the requirements for a story to get posted. ‘Nothing too smutty’?
“Hey Jonesy, come here and read some of these fanfics with me?” Darren called over his shoulder, vaguely curious what Daniel’s reaction would be to the stories. Maybe it would help Darren figure out the reason behind Daniel’s strange behavior. After a long moment, Darren could see the tall guitarist reluctantly walking back into the room.
“Please?” Darren coaxed “it looks like our fans put a lot of effort into these stories. The least we could do is read some of them.” Daniel seemed to mull it over then he slowly came over and stood behind Darren.
Some of the stories did cause Darren to raise an eyebrow though they were all well-written. But some of the stories seemed to upset Daniel, half-way through a story called ‘Fire Inside The Man’ the blond one violently turned around and made like he was going to leave again. This time, though, Darren got up and ran in front of him, effectively blocking Daniel’s path.
“What is the matter with you?” Darren demanded. Daniel desperately tried to maneuver around Darren, but the singer matched him move-for-move. They ended up in a short shoving match, with Darren becoming bewildered by the ferocity of Daniel’s attempts.
“Answer me, damn you!” Darren shouted. Suddenly the guitarist broke away from Darren and merely stood in front of the singer, his posture hostile and belligerent.
“Stupid fucking stories!! Who do they think they are??” Daniel finally exploded “How dare they say those things?!? Lies! All lies!!” An obscure light went off in Darren mind, he caught Daniel’s angry gaze and saw the fear the anger was hiding.
He slowly walked up to Daniel gripped him by his shoulders, causing the guitarist to flinch.
“Daniel,” Darren said quietly “they are just stories.”
he saw Daniel eyes widen as he realized how he had betrayed himself. Darren could feel Daniel trembling, whether in rage, fear or something else, he wasn’t sure. Daniel couldn’t see to tear his eyes away from Darren’s gaze. The singer realized how close he was to Daniel, with his hands still on Daniel’s muscled arms, he could smell his cologne. Darren wanted to close his eyes and savour this moment but he didn’t dare. Soon though, he took pity on his blond friend and, after a moment, he sighed to himself and let Daniel go. But, to Darren’s surprise, Daniel didn’t disappear again, he just stood there, still staring at Darren. Then, before the singer could react, Daniel slid forward and gave Darren the deepest kiss, betraying himself again with the intensity of desire in the kiss. When Darren had recovered from his shock, Daniel was gone again, leaving the singer trying to sort out what had just happened. He sat back down at the computer in a daze.
“Hmmm...what now?” Darren mused. The link called Thought Tank caught his eye. Curious, he clicked it.
“Ohh...it’s the guestbook. Well, since I’m here, I might as well sign it. Wouldn’t do to be rude.” Darren clicked ‘sign guestbook’ and sat looking at the empty form, trying to decide how to sign it.
But the memory of Daniel kiss kept haunting him, making it hard for him to think of a witty name or message.
“Oh bother, I’ll just sign it as myself , it’s not like anyone will believe it was me!” Darren exclaimed after a moment of frustration. Then he smiled as the idea pleased him, so he wrote just a short message. He needed to find Daniel, they needed to talk. This time, he wouldn’t let Daniel get away, Darren just needed to go find him.
And so he did.
